US soldiers fire into the air at Kabul airport to keep Afghan civilians off the runway

US forces fired in the air on Monday at Kabul’s airport as thousands of Afghans swept the runway, hoping to flee the country after the Taliban took control of it.

“I’m very scared here, they are shooting a lot in the air, I saw a girl having a crush,” a witness told AFP.

A US official told Reuters that US forces at Kabul airport were forced to shoot in the air to prevent Afghans from running to the runway to board military planes.

He added that the military flights departing from Kabul are only for the transportation of diplomats, foreign staff, and local staff of embassies.
