KUWAIT CITY, February 21: The population of Kuwait decreased by 105,694 during the “Corona year” (2020) as the number of expatriates decreased and the number of citizens increased.
The total population in Kuwait fell 2.2 percent, reaching 4 million and 670,000 people by the end of 2020, compared with 4 million and 776,000 at the end of 2019, Al-Rai reports daily.
According to official data from the Authority for Civil Information (PACI), the number of expatriates living in Kuwait in 2020 fell by four percent, as around 134,000 expatriates left in the period from January 2020 to December 2020.
That brings the total number of expatriates to 3 million and 210,000 people in 2020, compared to 3 million and 344,000 people at the end of 2019. In detail, 94 percent of the expatriates who have left Kuwait are men – about 126,000 – and the percentage of women who left Kuwait is six percent, which is roughly 8,000.
In terms of nationality, the Indian community recorded the highest rate of exodus – around 52 percent of all expatriates who left the country in 2020. Compared to the size of the community, their number decreased by 6.57 percent, which corresponds to about 69,592 Indians. This means that around 989,270 were reached in 2020, compared to a million and 58,000 in 2019
The Egyptian community-ranked second in terms of its members who left Kuwait in the “Coronavirus Year” with 22.5 percent of all departures.
In terms of community size, 4.3 percent of them, or 300,032 people, left the community, reducing the size of the Egyptian community in Kuwait from 696,082 in late 2019 to around 666,050 in 2020. The Bangladeshi community took third place when 13,076 of them left in 2020.
This made up around ten percent of the total departing expatriate. The number of these municipalities decreased from 282,591 in 2019 to 269,515 at the end of 2020.
Filipino citizenship recorded a 6,111 decrease in the number of its citizens in Kuwait in 2020, representing 4.5 percent of total departures, reaching 241,113 at the end of 2020 compared to 247,224 at the end of 2019.
The number of citizens increased by around 1.95 percent in 2020, which corresponds to around 27,925 men and women. The total number of citizens reached one million and 459,000 at the end of 2020, compared with one million and 432,000 at the end of 2019.
