Al-Saadoun: Winter begins tomorrow.. Astronomers

Astronomer and historian Adel Al-Saadoun said that tomorrow, Tuesday, the winter solar solstice, or the so-called winter solstice, will occur, and astronomically, winter begins in the northern hemisphere, and at the same time, summer begins in the southern hemisphere.

Al-Saadoun added in a statement to Kuwait News Agency today that the sun is perpendicular to the Tropic of Capricorn, which is located 5.23 degrees south of the equator, and the length of the night in the northern half of the Earth reaches its longest in the year. He explained that the length of the night in Kuwait is 13 hours and 43 minutes, and “the higher we go north from the equator, the longer the night becomes until it is 18 hours and 15 minutes in Helsinki, and the length of the night is 24 hours in the North Pole, which extends the length of the night to 6 continuous months, as darkness began there from mid-October to mid-March.

He mentioned that the sun’s height above the horizon at noon in Kuwait will be 4.37 degrees, compared to the time of the summer solstice, which at noon the sun is at a height of 3.84 degrees, explaining that the inclination of the sun close to the horizon in winter is one of the most important factors for the cold weather, where the sun’s rays are tilted, so the falling rays are distributed over Land on a larger area and reduce the heat.
